A shocking grammatical error led to one of Lincolnshire’s premier holiday resorts being unfortunately misnamed by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
A map produced on February 8 by Nuclear Waste Services, which is a branch of the NDA, identified the coastal council wards of Mablethorpe, Theddlethorpe and Withern as one possible location for Britain’s future underground nuclear waste dump. On the map, neighbouring Skegness, a resort historically described as ‘so bracing’, was incorrectly named as ‘Skegross’.
Responding to the faux-pas, Nuclear Free Local Authority (NFLA) Steering Committee Chair, Councillor David Blackburn, said in response to the news:
“I am sure that many readers will have fond memories of holidays in Skegness so I cannot explain this inexplicable mistake – perhaps the cartographer wanted revenge after having a bad experience by the sea? In any case, I would recommend the relevant NDA staff brush up on their geography and get a better spell checker.
“Certainly in the NFLA’s view any proposal to establish a Geological Disposal Facility, storing Britain’s most dangerous nuclear waste, near Mablethorpe or Skegness would be a complete disaster for the Lincolnshire tourism industry, for who wants to go for a holiday near a nuclear waste dump?”
