The Nuclear Free Local Authorities (NFLA) Scotland Forum pays tribute today to CND Scotland Co-ordinator John Ainslie, who sadly died last Friday after a long battle with cancer.
John Ainslie became Co-ordinator of CND Scotland in 1992, and was a regular attendee at NFLA Scotland Forum meetings, where CND Scotland is an affiliated group. He brought commitment, passion and good humour to the job and great cooperation over the past 24 years.
John was at the most recent NFLA Scotland Forum meeting held in Dunfermline Town Hall where his expert and extensive knowledge of the weaknesses and inadequacies of the Trident replacement programme were made clear for all to hear. As well as providing CND Scotland with its central role in the Trident debate in Scotland, John was a diligent researcher and his comments were regularly broadcast throughout the Scottish and wider UK media. His work on defence diversification with the Scottish TUC in particular brought a different context to the debate over nuclear weapons and jobs and NFLA agrees with the warm tribute of Dave Moxham, STUC Deputy General Secretary to John.
NFLA is also not surprised by the tributes given over the weekend to John by the Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, the Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn and the Green MSP Alison Johnstone. (1) As a cross-party body committed to a nuclear weapons free world, NFLA was always keen to work with John Ainslie and CND Scotland and both organisations will continue to play an important role in galvanising the strong support within Scotland and further afield to oppose Trident replacement.
Above all, John Ainslie was a truly warm and generous man who will be greatly missed by all who came into contact with him. A fitting tribute was held to John at the CND UK and Ireland Conference held over the weekend in Manchester and a minutes silence will be held for John at the NFLA’s UK and Ireland AGM and Annual Policy, which will incorporate the next NFLA Scotland Forum meeting, being held next month in Dublin City Hall. NFLA Scotland Forum Convenor Councillor Bill Butler said:
I have known and worked with John Ainslie for many years and am truly saddened by his untimely death. John was a joy to work with and he had such a sharp mind. He was an intellectual giant in the peace community and a determined leader of CND Scotland, though he would have been too modest to say so. I know all members of NFLA Scotland will greatly miss him and I know he will be a very hard act to follow. But I know John would want us to keep campaigning and working for the nuclear free Scotland, UK and world that he had been committed to achieve throughout his life. NFLA Scotland will continue to work with CND Scotland for that goal. May he rest in peace.”
