Opposing National Missile Defence Star Wars
In May 2001 NFLAs published a paper on the relevance of National Missile Defence for Local Authorities. A128 Missile Defence and Space Weapons.
Both Rotherham MBC and Leeds City Council have passed resolutions based on the model below:
"That this Council is deeply concerned by the implications for international security and the consequences for the safety of local communities arising from any development of a US National Missile Defence Programme. This Council believes development of ballistic missile defence risks increasing international tensions and diverting huge resources which could be better diverted to tackle poverty, environmental degradations and human rights abuse which sow the seeds of War. This Council therefore urges the Government to continue to use its good offices to promote international stability and sustainable development as a foundation for national and local peace, security and prosperity."
Please contact NFLAs if your local authority is considering putting a resolution based on the above model through.
