A one day seminar sponsored by Yorkshire Coal Task Force,
Nuclear Free Local Authorities and Rotherham MBC
What Next for UK Energy
Policy? Achieving Security and Sustainability
Friday 27 October
2006, Rotherham Town Hall, 10.30 - 3.00pm
Final Statement
This seminar:
- recognises that all forms of energy have substantial
effects on the environment and the Government must take this into account
when deciding the UK's future energy mix;
- recognises that the energy economy
must be diverse, flexible and secure;
- believes that electricity generation
using clean coal technologies with carbon capture can not only meet strict
EU environmental standards but, through technology transfer to the world's
developing economies, provide the most significant means of reducing
global carbon dioxide emissions;
- urges the Government to take immediate steps
to ensure that the UK coal industry can continue to contribute to maintaining
security of supply in a balanced energy economy;
- urges firmer Government
leadership on national energy saving, improved energy efficiency and
a rapid expansion of renewable energy capacity;
- considers the conclusion
in the Energy Review that new nuclear generating capacity is needed to
be premature;
- urges the Government to confirm that if a proposal to build
any new nuclear station is made, that it will provide for a joint public
inquiry based on the powers contained in Regulation 17 Justification
of Practices Involving Ionising Radiation Regulations, Section 14(1)
and (2B) Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Section 24(2) Radioactive
Substances Act 1993 and Schedule 8 Electricity Act 1989.
